★Japanese Navy Samurai Sword
Enacted in 1937 (the 12th year of the Showa Era).
The conventional saber-style long sword used by Army officers in the Shanghai Incident exposed serious flaws in actual combat.
In addition to the same complaints as the Army, such as "the protective fist is in the way", there were other problems associated with the naval long sword, such as "the shark skin on the hilt and the leather on the scabbard peeling off when it gets wet in the rain or mud" and "water getting in through the metal fittings on the pommel and rusting the sword".
However, since the Navy was not primarily a land-based warfare force, the exterior of the sword retained some of the ceremonial elements that the Army did not have. The hilt was made of black lacquered shark skin with a brown handle thread, and the scabbard was often lacquered in black lacquer. Some of the scabbards were made of black lacquered sharkskin, and some were wrapped in black grained leather for the Army.
