    Description

Hand made 1840's Coal Scuttle Bonnet. Authentic design for Dicken's and Pioneer Era.
The bonnet is covered in black 100% wool worsted. The interior of the brim is lined with gray and white checked 100% cotton flannel.  The exterior is decorated with rows of black silk-look rayon braid. The ties are made of striped black double faced satin ribbon, with matching ribbon loops on the sides. The bavolet is made of low luster black lace which is edged with narrow braid.
The stiffened brim of the bonnet has a wire inside which can be gently shaped into a taller or rounder shape. A coal scuttle bonnet (
    sometimes
referred to as a coal-scuttle bonnet or sugar scoop bonnet) is a design of a bonnet with stiffened brim and a flat back. The name originates from its similarity to the shape of a traditional coal storer.
The bonnet is designed to completely shade the face. One size fit's most women. It measures 28 1/2" around the crown. and is 11 1/4" deep from the center of the crown to the back.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, I am a retired Civil War reenactor/sutler and have been making bonnets for almost 40 years.
