    Description

Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and obtained from the famed NAKATA SHOTEN store in Ueno, Tokyo, Japan, is a reproduction early 20
    th
    century military-themed FUROSHIKI.
For those not familiar with Nakata Shoten, it is Japan’s premier military equipment establishment and was originally established in the immediate post-war years as a military surplus store. Over the decades, it has evolved into much, much more – the owner accumulated an incredible collection of original military equipment and uniforms, and now in addition to surplus, also sells the highest quality reproduction items ranging from Nambu machine guns to WWII Japanese uniforms to war-era FUROSHIKI.
Reproduction items from Nakata Shoten are displayed in the world’s finest military museums such as the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor.
A FUROSHIKI is a piece of cloth traditionally used by the Japanese to wrap gifts for presentation, serve as a carrying bag, and wrap things for storage – a very multi-purpose concept that allowed for creativity, beauty, and usefulness.
Often times, the furoshiki was printed with an attractive motif, like flowers, or during the early 20
    th
century, many FUROSHIKI were printed with patriotic motifs.
Such is the case of this furoshiki reprinted from one in the personal collection of the owner of NAKATA SHOTEN – as can be seen from the accompanying scans, it has a prominent Imperial Japanese Army star and a Japanese ‘Rising Sun’ flag as well as Imperial chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms, often associated with warriors from the Russo-Japanese War through to World War II.
The kanji is a Japanese poem espousing martial values.
This 26 x 28 inch cloth is printed on one side and folds down to a more manageable 7 x 7 inch square.
It is made of cotton and as can be seen from the scan, very attractive and also useful.
