    DESCRIPTION:
FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS, CRITICS HAVE RAVED ABOUT THE ACURA INTEGRA. EVIDENTLY OUR ENGINEERS WEREN’T LISTENING.
    INTRODUCING THE 1990 ACURA INTEGRA.
THE ONLY THING WE DIDN’T CHANGE WAS OUR PHILOSOPHY
As little as three years ago, if you’d asked a group of performance car buyers to describe an Acura, they couldn’t have told you whether it was a car, or a stereo, or the newest thing in running shoes.
Our reputation has grown quite a bit since then. Not only have the Acura Legend and Integra captured the hearts of more than 300,000 satisfied owners, they’ve racked up an array of honors that reads like every automaker’s wish list. The Legend Coupe put in an appearance on Car and Driver’s Ten Best list in both 1988 and 1989.*
The Integra was already there, in 1987 and again in 1988. And together, for the last two years running, they’ve claimed the number
one spot in the prestigious J.D. Power & Associates Customer Satisfaction Index surveys. A survey which not only recognizes the excellence of the cars themselves -but that of the dealers who sell and service them.
Dealers who’ve managed to acquire quite a reputation of their own over the past several years. Yet what may seem like an overnight success story is actually another kind of story altogether. One that’s not nearly so glamorous, but is, to our way of thinking, a good deal more meaningful.
    A story of innovation.
    And some might argue, obsession.
    Long before there was a
single Acura automobile, there was a philosophy. An uncompromising attitude toward automaking and auto design that has driven us to think and rethink, test and retest every single component that goes into our cars. Not just once or twice, but as many times as it takes. Not just to get it done, but to get it right.
This attitude is evidenced by our strong commitment to Formula One racing — a sport so technologically demanding and expensive, only a handful of automakers are involved. Our motivation for racing is simple: building engines for cars that travel at speeds exceeding 200 MPH is the best way we know of to teach engineers how to build engines for cars that travel at a somewhat saner pace.
    Of course, we realize that
    innovation isn't limited to the
race trade. It’s also found at the test trade. Specifically, at an automotive proving ground called Tochigi, where we’ve painstakingly recreated just about every driving condition you can imagine. And some that are so torturous, you probably can’t.
There, our test drivers put our cars up against some of the worst surfaces the world has to offer the pot holes and frost heaves of a New England expressway, the rain grooves and jolting
expansion joints of a West Coast freeway, the suspension torturing cobblestones of a Belgian boulevard. And that’s
    just to name a few.
We even constructed a special road for the sole purpose of testing our Anti-Lock Braking (ALB) system. When wet, this low-friction surface is slicker and more treacherous than glass, which is exactly the way we like it. And while it cost millions to build, to us it’s worth all of that and more.
Why go to the trouble of bringing all these roads together in one place?
In short, we did it to make sure that Acura automobiles can handle practically any situation the road presents you with. Smoothly, precisely and consistently.
It was this kind of obsession with finding new and better ways of doing things that produced a car as highly acclaimed as the first Integra.
And, in turn, led to a car like the 1990 Integra. With
a new 1.8-Liter engine, for improved performance. A streamlined body, for better aerodynamics and handling. A redesigned interior; for enhanced control and comfort. And a feature you won't find on many other cars in its class - available Anti-Lock Brakes. Add to that a few hundred other major and minor innovations, and you end up with a car that could very well restore your faith in the term “new and improved.”
Going to such lengths to redesign an automobile that was already one of the most successful cars of the decade may seem excessive. But the way we see it any innovation that can enhance your driving enjoyment ought to go from the drawing board to the road as swiftly as possible.
Our philosophy demands it. And happily, so do the kind of people who drive our cars.
THIS YEAR, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WILL BECOME FORMULA ONE RACING FANS. WHETHER THEY KNOW IT OR NOT.
The individuals who buy a new Integra this year will be married and single, male and female, young and not so young, and they’ll choose our automobiles for a lot of different reasons.
But they’ll all have one thing in common: a desire for outstanding performance.
And whether they are aware of it or not, the
performance advantages found under the hood of the 1990 Acura Integra have their roots
in the most competitive driving conditions in the world — the international Formula One circuit.
In the process of earning thirty individual racing victories and three consecutive world championships, we’ve learned the value of things like programmed fuel injection. Aluminum alloys. Dual overhead cams. And 4-valves-per-cylinder technology.
Technology which translates into enhanced power
and smooth, responsive performance. Qualities that are every bit as useful to people who see the world at 55 MPH as they are to people who see it at 200.
Racing has also taught us the value of teamwork. Which is why, when we were ready to design a new engine for the 1990 Integra, we went to the same team of engineering experts at Honda R & D who developed our twin turbo V-6 race engine. The engine
that’s dominated the Formula One circuit since 1986.
So it’s not too surprising that the 1990 Integra can take you from zero to sixty almost a full second faster than its predecessor. And it’s no coincidence that its new 1.8-liter DOHC engine delivers more in the way of horsepower, or that it runs more smoothly than ever before.
Of course, innovations like these can best be appreciated by performing the most basic ritual of Formula One racing champions everywhere.
Pressing your right foot on the accelerator.
    OUR ENGINEERS
    WOULDN'T ASK YOU TO
SPEND ONE MINUTE WHERE THEY HADN’T SPENT 100,000 HOURS.
Have you ever stopped to consider just how much time you spend in your car each year? 100 hours? 150 hours? Truth be told, the national average is closer to 400. Which, if you’re like most people, is about 375 hours more than you’d probably prefer. And now for the good news. When our engineers set out to design the interior of the 1991 Integra, they kept that very fact in mind. Along with the unwavering belief that, given the right environment, those hours spent
behind the wheel could be some of the best of your day.
As you might expect, building an environment like that takes a little more time. And a little more thought.
But the end result is a lot more car.
Take the Integra instrument panel for instance, a wingshaped design that wraps around, the
driver. The controls and gauges are easy to reach and easy to see, so it’s easier to keep your mind on more important things. Like what’s up ahead.
Furthering that cause is the Integra steering wheel. A wheel that’s not only been designed to offer you an excellent grip, but comes attached to a sport-sensitive, power-assisted, rack and pinion steering system that offers you an excellent feel for the road.
Likewise, in designing the bolstered front bucket seats of the Integra we didn’t just worry about fabrics and patterns; we worried about your body. Making sure that the curves and contours we gave our seats matched the curves and contours Mother Nature gave you.
Another thing you’ll notice inside the Integra is how easily you can see outside the Integra. And that’s because of the driving compartment’s expansive greenhouse design. In plain English, that means an exceptionally
large window area, giving you exceptional visibility. Forward. Backward. And everywhere in-between.
But creating a better driving environment not only means rethinking the components inside the car. It means rethinking the ones under the car. Namely, the suspension system. The Integra has a new four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension system, the same basic design found on the Acura Legend. Meaning it has the not-so-basic ability to be precisely tuned for both responsive handling and a stable, extremely comfortable ride.
Combine this system with front and rear stabilizer bars and advanced nitrogen gas shock absorbers, and you’ll find that the Integra not only excels at straightening out the twisting roads, but smoothing out the rough variety.
Chances are you’ll never notice the thousands of hours our engineers spent inside the Integra.
    Nothing will attract your attention.
    Nothing will stick out.
Nothing will feel the least bit unusual.
Which, to our way of thinking, means that all those
    hours were quite worthwhile.
